Join The Farm! FAQ
What is Join the Farm! CSA?
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, an arrangement in which subscribers buy a portion of a farmer’s crop at the beginning of the season and receive weekly boxes of whatever is being harvested fresh from the field. Join the Farm! CSA is a unique partnership between DeBusschere Family Farms and the Abundant Table Farm Project (ATFP) – a year-long internship for young adults.
What sort of farming practices do you use?
We are CCOF certified organic which means we use no bioengineered crops or synthetic fertilizers and only organically-approved pest control measures.
What is a Join the Farm! CSA box like?
Weekly shares of our fresh produce come in re-usable bushel boxes, enough to feed 4 people for a week. The contents vary depending on what we’re harvesting. In our summer season (July through September) we’re expecting lettuces, greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, summer squashes, onions, basil, cilantro, corn, melons, tomatillos, peppers, eggplants, beans and more! We also include our newsletter with updates from the farm and a guide to what’s in your box with recipes to help you enjoy it!
What if I can’t eat that much produce? What if I don’t want something that is in my box?
It may seem like quite a bit of produce, but our subscribers have found investing in a salad spinner, prepping the produce for use through out the week, and using ideas from the newsletter really helps to use all the delicious and good for your body veggies. Our website is also chock full with nutritional, preparation, and storage information about items in your box. We also have a recipe page with subscribers’ tried and true vegetable recipes. We've got a variety of subscription options to meet your vegetable needs! If you can’t handle a full share, consider splitting a subscription with a friend or neighbor, purchasing a half share (receiving a box twice each month instead of each week), or getting a weekly mini-box (a weekly box with 5-7 items). We also provide a Swap box at every pick-up site, where you can leave anything you won’t be eating or pick up some extra of something someone else didn’t want. We love to hear what you enjoyed and want more of, or what didn’t work out so well so we know what to plant for you!
How much does it cost?
A seasonal subscription (11 weeks) costs $400 (reduced to $350 if you sign up before the season starts), and a whole year of organic goodness is $1400. A half share is $225 for a season. A weekly mini box share is $165. Our "pick three" share is $100 for your chosen three weeks of produce. If you’d like to “join the farm” after the season has started, we can pro-rate the cost of your box. If the full cost of a box prohibits you from participating in our CSA, talk to us and we will do our best to find a solution. You can pay by check (made out to “Join the Farm”) or online (at www.jointhefarm.com).
How do I get my box?
Box pick-ups are on Tuesdays at CSUCI, Camarillo Central, the Camarillo YMCA, Oxnard, Ventura, Malibu, Fillmore and the Farm, and on Thursdays at Newbury Park, Oak Park, Thousand Oaks and Woodland Hills. Want a pick-up site closer to you? Find a group of prospective subscribers and let us know!
